Louisiana opens final homestand on Tuesday
Charlotte, NC: Charlotte completed its first-ever sweep of Rice with a 9-0 blanking of the Owls on Sunday at Hayes Stadium.
The Details: Charlotte jumped on Rice starter Brandon Deskins (2-6) for a pair of runs in each of the first two innings to give starter Collin Kramer (3-1) an early cushion. Rice put a pair on in the top of the first on an error and a two-out walk, but could not convert for an early lead. Kramer held Rice hitless until Pierce Gallo doubled down the right-field line with one out in the third, but Gallo was tagged out after over-sliding the second base bag. Kramer walked just three, two of them to Aaron Smigelski, and did not allow more than one Owl on base in any inning after the first.

Notable
- The sweep by Charlotte was the 49ers' first against Rice in seven series meetings between the schools since they first met in 2015.
- The loss was the Owls' 10th straight in C-USA road games after opening with wins in their first two games at Marshall.
- The Owls were held to a season-low one hit, their fewest hits in a game since they were held hitless by Southern Miss at the Conference USA tournament on 5/25/19.
- Rice dropped its first Mother's Day game since a 6-5 loss in 12 innings to Southern Miss in 2012. The Owls had won their last eight Mother's Day games.
- Rice pitchers fanned 12 in the game, one shy of the Owls' season-best of 13 done three times (most recently on 3/26 at Marshall).
- Deskins' start was also his 20th appearance of the season, a career-high and also tying for the team lead.
