HATTIESBURG, Miss. — No. 6 Southern Miss scored seven times in the seventh inning as Rice fell in the series finale, 12-2, Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.
The Story
Southern Miss jumped on top in the second inning. After Gabe Montenegro drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second, Will McGillis brought him in with an RBI double. USM added another run in the third. After loading the bases, Rice turned to Roel Garcia who got Christopher Sargent to hit into a first pitch double play, scoring Carson Paetow. But Garcia then got Montenegro to ground out to first, limiting the damage. Rice took advantage in the next inning. Austin Bulman dropped a leadoff single into left field for its first hit of the game. Nathan Becker then hit a 1-0 pitch over the left center field wall for his second home run of the year, tying the game at two. But Southern Miss brought three across in the fifth inning on four hits to retake the lead. The Owls had a chance to cut into the lead in the seventh. Manny Garza hit a two-out double and two batters later, Justin Dunlap singled. But Jack Riedel struck out to leave them stranded on the corners. However, Southern Miss scored seven times in the seventh inning, including Paetow's grand slam that ended the game.
