IRVING, Texas - Rice junior cross country runner Anna Figueroa was one of 14 Conference USA student-athletes to receive the league's Fall Spirit of Service Award, C-USA Commissioner Judy MacLeod announced on Tuesday (Dec. 12).
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service Award will be presented three times throughout the season, with today's honorees representing C-USA's fall sports: football, soccer, volleyball and cross country.
Figueroa competed in six races for the Owls this past fall, highlighted by a 10th place finish at the McNeese State Cowboy Stampede Invite. In addition, Figueroa placed 12th overall in the 42nd annual Rice Invitational.
The Avondale Estates, Georgia native volunteered her time in the Philippines as an English teacher last summer before helping those in need following Hurricane Harvey. In addition, Figueroa spent time as an English tutor this past semester.
A double-major in Political Science and Spanish & Portuguese, Figueroa maintains an impressive 3.87 GPA and has been named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll three times.
