The Rice women's cross country team will look to build upon their strong opening performance when race against a field of 12 teams in the 14th annual Islander's Splash on Friday in Corpus Christi.
The Owls moved to 3rd in the South Central Regional rankings after their opening performance at the Rice Invitational on September 13. The youthful Owls finished second, thanks to a trio of freshmen who finished in the top 14 and head coach Jim Bevan is looking forward to seeing how his young team responds to their first road action of the season.
Cali Roper finished third to lead all Owls and was closely followed by freshman teammate Katie Jensen at 14:53. Hannah Kay, also a freshman, ran 15:41 to finish 14th among collegians at the Rice Invitational.
"We are looking forward to meet two on our season," Bevan said. "The Corpus meet is a nice chance to run a race close to home and give our young team some more experience."
The women's 5 km race is scheduled to start at 6:20 p.m. at West Guth Park in Corpus Christi and live results will be available at http://flashresultstexas.com/2013/IslanderSplash13/
The Owls will race against runners from Sam Houston State, Texas State, Houston, Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern, UT - Pan American, Texas A&M - Kingsville, Texas A&M International, Rogers State, UT Brownsville and the host team, Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
