WACO, Texas - Rice's women's cross country team placed ninth at the NCAA South Central Regional Friday morning in Waco. Cali Roper, the reigning C-USA Freshman of the Meet two weeks ago in Denton, led the Owls with a 13th place finish.
Roper ran the 6k course in a lifetime best mark of 20:49, as did junior Allie Schaich (39th-21:48), senior Heather Olson (54th-22:16) and freshman Katie Jensen (72nd-22:41). Sophomore Christina Wassef (86th-23:02), junior Laura Michel (108th-23:42) and junior Kathleen Abadie (125th-24:38) finished out the race for the Owls.
"I was very happy with our effort , unfortunately we didn't get the result we would have liked," Rice women's cross country head coach Jim Bevan said. "We never really were healthy all season long but I'm proud of the way our girls competed. Obviously Cali ran a terrific race and now we'll wait until Monday to see if she qualified for nationals."
Roper's time was the fastest by a freshman in the 6k in Rice history. If she does advanced to the NCAA Championship, it will be held Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
