COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Rice women’s cross country placed 11th at the NCAA South Central Regional Friday morning in College Station at the Watts Cross Country Course.
The Owls were led by sophomore Khayla Patel, who placed 19th overall (20:32) in the 6k race against some of the nation’s best. The Houston native earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors for finishing among the top-25 individual finishers.
Senior Elsa Racasan finished as the Owls number two runner, placing 32nd (20:53), followed by freshman Lourdes Vivas de Lorenzi (56th-21:31). The remaining finishers for the Owls were Rachel Peterson (96th-22:15), Maddie Forbes (110th-22:36), Ruby Watson (124th-22:46), and Anna Figueroa (126th-22:47).
“We weren’t on today,” Rice head coach Jim Bevan said. “Khayla had a great race and improved from 44th to 19th this year, I’m very proud of her. We will miss Elsa, Rachel and Anna next year. Rachel closed with her best race ever at Rice and I’m very proud of her. Elsa is one of the best leaders we’ve ever had and will be truly missed. We gained experience with four freshmen in our top eight and Khayla returns as well. It’s been a learning year and I hope we can grow and put it to good use next year.”
Arkansas (35 points) won the team title, followed by Texas (93 points) and Baylor (116 points).
