LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Rice sophomore Khayla Patel placed eighth overall and the Rice Owls women's cross country team finished 15th as a team (417 points) at Saturday's Pre National meet, hosted by Louisville.
The Owls, competing in the Women's Black 6k race, were paced by Patel's time of 21:15. Finishing behind Patel was freshman Lourdes Vivas de Lorenzi (45th-22:01), senior Elsa Racasan (103rd-22:41), senior Anna Figeuroa (128th-22:56), freshman Maddie Forbes (135th-23:02), junior Rachel Peterson (168th-23:27) and freshman Ruby Watson (198th-23:52).
"As a team we had a rough day," Rice head coach Jim Bevan said. "We had two runners (Elsa and Ruby) that had problems on the course they couldn't recover from. Khayla ran another outstanding race, even superior to her other performances this year. Anna and Maddie stepped up for the team today. We've got two weeks now to get 100 percent healthy and back together in time for conference. This is a great group of young ladies and we'll be working towards that goal."
The Conference USA Championships will be held Oct. 28 in Jackson, Miss. at 10 a.m.
