Houston - The Rice's women's cross country team won its third team title of the season with a victory at the Houston Baptist/Puma Invitational Friday evening.
Rice's other two victories came at the Rice Invitational and the Islander Splash in Corpus Christi. The Owls totaled 32 points in Friday's win with four top-10 finishes.
Freshman Allie Schaich led the Owl contingent with a third place time of 17:48. Just right behind Schaich was sophomore Lindsay Miller. Miller covered the three-mile distance in 17:49. Johanna Ohm was sixth (18:12), while Laura Michel was seventh at 18:14 to round the Owls' top 10 runners.
Head coach Jim Bevan was impressed by his squad's performance.
"Our ladies ran an awesome race and I was delighted with the performances, led by Allie and Lindsay," stated Bevan. "We were able to move up throughout the race and Johanna, Laura, and Kathleen really picking people off throughout the race. This was personal best for Laura, Kathleen, and Lindsay. The race was also a good development race for Sarah Mason, Kylie Cullinan and Sophie. This is good work for the 1500 and 800 in track. Sasha really ran hard, but is a little off. She will only get better. I am really encouraged and feel like we are making steps in the right direction. We really competed well today."
Houston finished third with 56 points, while Sam Houston State followed with 72 points. UH's Megan Munoz won the individual crown with a time of 17:29 and Ayssa Dooley, of Sam Houston State, was second at 17:41.
Rice is not in action until it competes at the Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. on Oct. 16.
