LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Rice Owls women's cross country team recorded a dominating victory at the McNeese Cowboy Stampede Saturday morning at the Derbonne Multisports Complex.
The Owls, who won their second meet of the season, won the 5k race by placing seven runners in the top 10, including an individual victory from sophomore Khayla Patel. The Houston native won her second individual meet of the season with a time of 17:36, edging out McNeese State's Katja Woelfl (17:38).
Joining Patel in the top 10 was senior Elsa Racasan (4th-17:49), freshman Lourdes Vivas de Lorenzi (5th-17:55), freshman Ruby Watson (7th-18:34), junior Rachel Peterson (8th-18:38), freshman Maddie Forbes (9th-18:40), and junior Ann Figueroa (10th-18:49).
"I'm very proud of our team today," Rice head coach Jim Bevan said. "We showed improvement with Lourdes moving closer to Khayla and closing that gap. Ruby, Rachel and Maddie moved up as well. It was Maddie's first meet as an Owl and she performed great. We raced better one week after the A&M meet so I'm very happy. Khayla obviously won and did so with a devastating kick. I'm very proud of her."
Ranked ninth in the USTFCCCA South Central Region Poll entering the race, the Owls will next race at the Pre-Nationals Meet hosted by Louisville on Oct. 14.
