Rice women's cross country finished second, finishing only behind Texas A&M, who is ranked third in the South Central Region, in the 37th Annual Justin F. Cooper Memorial Rice Invitational Meet on Friday at the Rice Intramural Fields. Marie Thompson finished seventh for the Owls.
"For our first real meet, our ladies did an outstanding job of moving up through the pack, and finishing second overall," said Rice Head Coach Jim Bevan. "It's the biggest collegiate match we've ever had at Rice with 14 teams competing. I'm excited about the prospects for this team over this season. I was very elated by Marie Thompson's performance, after overcoming a year-long injury, and not having raced in 18 months. She ran a great first race back, and led us to our second-place finish. The Wassef twins are showing that the longer the race is, the better they're going to do. They moved up during the race from 120th to finish in the top 20. Allie Schaich has improved over the last year, and Laura Michel has improved over the last year. Farah Madanay was a little under the weather so im anticipating better, and Lindsey Miller ran better than her race from two weeks ago. We're looking forward to taking this group to Lehigh in two weeks."
Allie Schaich ran a 13:49 to finish 31st.
