IRVING, Texas – Redshirt freshman setter Sara Blasier was recognized for her stellar first season as a Rice Owl by being named to the Conference USA All-Conference Second Team as well as the seven-player All-Freshman Team, the league announced on Tuesday.
Blasier is the first Owl to be named to C-USA All-Freshman team since Jillian Humphrey in 2011 and the seventh Rice student-athlete to be named to the squad overall.
A native of Hartford, Wisconsin, Blasier ended the regular season with a team-best 842 assists in 81 sets played (10.4 per set). During league play Blasier was fifth in C-USA with 503 assists (11.43 per set). The redshirt freshman has the Owls hitting .221 and sits seventh overall in the conference with 10.40 aps.
Blasier is also tied for the team lead with 16 service aces and fifth in digs with 167.
Rice will open the 2013 C-USA Tournament this Thursday as the No. 10 seed and will play No. 7 UAB at 7 p.m. in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
