News & Notes
*The Owls return to Houston for their final homestand of the regular season with a pair of matches against C-USA heavyweights in No. 25 WKU and Southern Miss. Rice is 2-4 all-time against WKU, including a five-set heartbreaker in last year’s C-USA title match at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls defeated then No. 22 WKU in five sets on Oct. 31, 2015. WKU beat the Owls in five sets in the 2014 C-USA title match. The Owls are 13-6 all-time against Southern Miss, including a split in five-set matches last season. Rice defeated the Golden Eagles 3-2 to advance to the C-USA title match last season.

*Rice is coming off a 1-1 road trip in which they saw their season-high eight-match win streak come to an end last Friday at North Texas (L, 3-1). The win streak was tied for the fifth-longest in school history. The Owls have won 14 of 16 overall (including 10 straight at home) and one more victory would mark the fourth straight year they’ve reached 20 wins.

*Rice has already established a single-season school record with eight, five-set victories. The Owls are 8-1 overall when going the distance and have played and won four consecutive matches in five sets. Eight of the Owls last 14 matches have gone the full five sets.

*The Owls moved up in the VolleyballMag.com Mid-Major rankings from No. 21 to No. 20 this week. WKU (No. 5) and North Texas (14) also represent C-USA in the poll.

*Rice leads C-USA in digs per set (16.86), team assists (1,296-9th in nation), team kills (1,373-10th in nation), team digs (1,737-13th in nation) and team total attacks (3,764-20th in nation). In addition the Owls rank second in blocks per set (2.47), opponents hitting percentage (.166), team attacks per set (36.54), and team total blocks (254.0).

*Freshman outside hitter Nicole Lennon leads all Owls with 13 double-doubles and ranks first in C-USA in points (411.0) and total attacks (1,102). Only Chattanooga’s Ally Ford (1,144 attacks) has more swings than Lennon among freshmen in the nation.

*During C-USA play, sophomore middle blocker Grace Morgan has been spectacular for the Owls. The Crowley, La. is fifth in the league in hitting percentage (.409), totaling 162 kills on 313 attacks. She also ranks first in league play in total blocks (68) and blocks per set (1.42).

*Rice’s 27.0 team blocks performance against UTSA was the most by a team in a single match this season in all of NCAA Division I and ranked second in school history (29 done twice in 1983 and 1988).

*Earlier this season, Madison McDaniel (3,176 assists) eclipsed 3,000 career assists and moved past former Owl great Megan Murphy (3,006 assists) for sixth place on the Rice all-time assists list.

*Head coach Genny Volpe recorded her 250th career win in the Owls’ 3-1 victory over
Georgetown on Sept. 16. The Owls all-time leader in totals wins (260) and winning percentage (.607) is one win away from her seventh 20-win season at Rice.
