IRVING, Texas – Rice senior outside hitter Leah Mikesky helped guide the Owls to a 2-0 record this past weekend and in the process was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Mikesky, from Schulenburg, Texas, earned her second career C-USA weekly honor by totaling 28 total digs in seven sets (4.0 digs per set) while also recording 5.0 total blocks (0.71 bps) from the left side. In addition to her defensive efforts, Mikesky led the Owls with 28 total kills (4.0 per set) while hitting .333.
Mikesky notched her 12th double-double (third most in C-USA) of the season in Friday’s win over North Texas with 13 kills and 19 digs and followed that up with 15 kills (.462) and 9 digs in the Owls’ 3-0 sweep over Charlotte on Sunday.
The Owls (17-9, 9-2) are currently in second place in the C-USA standings with three matches remaining in the regular season.
Rice faces a challenging upcoming weekend in which they travel to No. 21 WKU (24-2, 11-0) on Friday followed by a rematch against the team that knocked them out in the C-USA Championship last year, Southern Miss (18-7, 7-3), on Sunday.
