Full C-USA Player of the Week Release

IRVING, Texas – Rice junior Madison McDaniel was named the Conference USA Setter of the Week while fellow junior teammate Portia Okafor earned Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week honors, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
The Owls went 2-1 this past week, including weekend sweeps over Marshall and UAB to improve to 9-1 over their last 10 matches.
McDaniel, from The Woodlands, Texas, recorded her league-leading 14th and 15th double-doubles of the season while averaged 11.55 assists per set and 3.09 digs per set in 11 total sets.
In Sunday’s win over UAB, McDaniel posted 38 assists and 13 digs in only three sets. Prior to that the junior notched 40 assists in just three sets and helped guide an offense that hit .346 as a team en route to a 3-0 win over Marshall. McDaniel ranks third among all C-USA players in total assists (271) during league play. The award is McDaniel’s seventh career C-USA weekly honor.
Okafor, from Lewisville, Texas, totaled 20.0 blocks in 11 sets (1.82 per set) and had at least six blocks in all three matches last week. Okafor’s seven blocks versus Marshall on Oct. 14 were the third-most by a C-USA player in three sets this season. Okafor ranks first in total blocks (39) during league play and second in blocks per set (1.56). The award is Okafor’s third career C-USA weekly honor.
McDaniel, Okafor and the rest of the Owls will look to ride their momentum on the road this weekend when they face UTSA on Friday (6 p.m.) and play at UTEP on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. (CT).
