IRVING, Texas – One day after completing a 3-0 week on the court, the Rice Owls volleyball team was recognized on Monday with the league office announcement of Jillian Humphrey and Sara Blasier being named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week and the C-USA Setter of the Week, respectively.
Humphrey had a stellar offensive week, leading the Owls to a 3-0 record with nine consecutive set victories. Ranked first in all of C-USA in hitting percentage (.510), Humphrey totaled 39 kills in the three matches while hitting a staggering .667 (39-of-54).
The senior led the Owls in kills in all three matches, including a week's best 14 at North Texas in a 3-1 victory. She followed that up with 12 kills on 14 attacks (.857) in a straight-set win over UTEP. On Sunday, Humphrey added 13 more kills on 19 attacks (.579) against Charlotte. This is the first C-USA Offensive Player of the Week award in Humphrey's career as she previously won a C-USA Defensive Player of the Week award in October of 2012.
Blasier continued her blistering season pace with 119 assists over the past week, averaging 11.9 assists per set, while helping guide the Owls to a 3-0 record. Ranked number one overall in assists (771) in C-USA and fourth in the nation, the sophomore dished out 47 assists in a big 3-1 road victory at North Texas. She then followed with 33- and 39-assist performances against UTEP and Charlotte, respectively.
Blasier played an instrumental role in guiding the Owls to a .569 set percentage (119-of-209). The award is the Wisconsin native's first Setter of the Week honor this year and is the second of her career (Oct. 14, 2013).
The Owls play just one match this week, traveling to Middle Tennessee on Friday for a 6 p.m. match.
