News & Notes
*Winners of five straight, the Rice Owls volleyball team will hit the road this weekend for a pair of matches in the state of Tennessee. On Friday the Owls will take on Middle Tennessee in their first C-USA road match of the season, followed by a non-conference tilt at Tennessee St. on Saturday. Rice is 3-2 all-time against the Blue Raiders while this will be the first-ever meeting with the Tigers. These will be Rice’s only third and fourth road matches of the season.
*The Owls five-match win streak marks the 27th time in school history the Owls have built a win streak of five or more matches, including 11 in the Coach Volpe era. The longest win streak in school history is 12 straight in 1995.
*Rice senior right side hitter Chelsey Harris was selected the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, the league office announced. The Houston native earned her first career C-USA weekly honor by leading the Owls to a 2-0 weekend with 40 kills in eight sets (5.56 per set), all while hitting a staggering .540. Harris, who collected a team-high 44.5 points this past weekend, tied her career-high with 25 kills (.488) in Rice’s 3-2 comeback victory over UTEP on Friday and followed up that performance with 15 more kills (.636) in only three sets vs. LA Tech on Sunday.
*Rice junior setter Madison McDaniel currently ranks ninth in the nation in total assists (640), which is good enough for second in Conference USA. McDaniel is currently tied with UTEP’s Lindsey Larson with a league-high 11 double-doubles.
