      Weekend Storylines
  • Rice will be facing Green Bay for the first time in school history on Friday. The Phoenix are 1-5 thus far under first-year head coach Sean Burdette. 
  • The Owls will play host Marquette in the nightcap of Friday’s action. The Golden Eagles were the first team outside the NCAA Top 25, receiving 50 votes in the latest poll. Marquette is 3-2 so far in 2014 after going 26-6 last season and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • On Saturday, the Owls will close the Marquette Invitational by playing another first-time opponent in James Madison (4-3). 
  • Rice sophomore setter Sara Blasier returns to her home state of Wisconsin where she was an all-conference and first-team all-area selection at Slinger High School.

  • Rice was picked to finish third in the C-USA by the league’s coaches.
  • Sara Blasier was selected Preseason All-C-USA.
  • Blasier set a three-set career-high with 39 assists in the win over the Islanders (9/9).
  • Jillian Humphrey was named the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week (9/8) after winning two of three at the NC State Tournament by leading the Owls with 12 blocks, two solo, including a match-high six in a big five-set win over UConn.
  • The Owls 3-2 win over the UConn Huskies broke a streak of eight consecutive five-set losses, dating back to a 3-2 triumph over UTEP in El Paso back on Oct. 21, 2012.
  • Setter Sara Blasier and defensive specialist Kimberly Vaio were each named to the Courtyard Midtown Classic All-Tournament Team. Blasier finished with 127 assists in the three matches (9.7 per set), 27 digs and 17 kills. Vaio recorded a team-best 42 digs (3.2 per set).
  • Transfer Leah Mikesky has recorded five consecutive double-doubles.
  • Jillian Humphrey became just the sixth Owl in school history to register 400+ career blocks with her seven block performance against the Ragin’ Cajuns on Aug. 30.
