NEWS AND NOTES

*The Owls return home to the friendly confines of Tudor Fieldhouse to host the annual Rice Adidas Invitational this weekend (Sept. 11-12). Rice (5-2) is coming off a co-tournament title at the Yale Invitational, which included a victory over last year’s NCAA Tournament-qualifying Bulldogs in a thrilling five-set match.

*Rice sophomore setter Madison McDaniel ranks eighth in the nation, first in C-USA, in total assists (322). Other Owls ranked individually in the nation’s top-20 include Portia Okafor (blocks-18th-35) and Leah Mikesky (total attacks-18th-317).

*The Owls rank ninth in the country in both team assists (385) and team kills (413).
Okafor became the first Owl since Jillian Humphrey in 2013 to record 10 or more blocks in a single-match with her 11-block effort in the win over Yale (9/5).

*McDaniel earned her second consecutive C-USA Setter of the Week award, the league announced Tuesday. McDaniel earned a spot on the Yale Invitational All-Tournament Team by racking up 199 assists in 17 sets (11.71 aps) and 55 digs (3.24 per set) during four matches last week.

*Freshman middle blocker McKay Kyle earned the C-USA Freshman of the Week after providing a boost to the Owls’ offensive attack in Connecticut, accumulating 46 kills in 17 sets (2.71 per set) while hitting a sensational .494. Kyle totaled 57.5 total points at weekend’s end and posted double-digit kills in all four matches. She currently ranks second among all freshmen in C-USA in hitting percentage (.360).

*On Saturday the Owls will be looking for their first victory over a Top-25 team since defeating No. 17 LSU (3-0) on Nov. 27, 2009. C-USA squads have already knocked off No. 5 Wisconsin (WKU) and No. 12 Oregon (UTSA) this season.
