IRVING, Texas – Following a 3-1 week and earning a share of the Yale Invitational title, the Rice Owls volleyball team was recognized for their play Tuesday when the league office announced sophomore Madison McDaniel the Setter of the Week and middle blocker McKay Kyle the Freshman of the Week.
A sophomore transfer from The Woodlands, McDaniel earned her second consecutive Setter of the Week award after earning a spot on the Yale Invitational All-Tournament Team. McDaniel totaled 199 assists in 17 sets (11.71 aps) and also recorded 55 digs (3.24 per set) during four matches last week.
McDaniel notched a double-double in all four matches, including a monster 62-assist, 20-dig performance in a come-from-behind victory over host Yale. The 62 assists were the highest single-match total in C-USA this season and she now leads all of C-USA in total assists (322) and assists per set (11.10).
Kyle, from San Antonio, Texas, provided a big boost to the Owls’ offensive attack this last week by accumulating 46 kills in 17 sets (2.71 per set) while hitting a sensational .494. Kyle totaled 57.5 total points at weekend’s end and posted double-digit kills in all four matches. She currently ranks second among all freshmen in C-USA in hitting percentage (.360).
The Owls will be back in action this weekend when they host the Rice Adidas Invitational, Friday-Saturday. Rice will first face Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a Saturday doubleheader against Sam Houston State at 10:30 a.m. and No. 23 Colorado at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale at RiceOwls.com or by calling 713-348-OWLS (6957).
