LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Rice University volleyball team received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for an eighth consecutive season, the organization announced on Monday.
The Owls completed the 2015-16 academic school year with a cumulative grade point average of 3.598. In addition, junior Leah Mikesky was a CoSIDA Academic All-American Third Team selection, as well as a District 15 CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team honoree and a member of the C-USA All-Academic Team.
The AVCA Team Academic Award was established in the 1992-93 academic year and honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom. Teams must maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative GPA on a 5.0 scale.
Rice has received the AVCA Team Academic Award every year since the 2008-09 season. The Owls open the 2016 season on Aug. 26 vs. Cal Poly at the BYU Invitational.
