Houston - Rice University head volleyball coach Genny Volpe has announced the 2011 Rice Owls volleyball schedule, one that features a home date against PAC-10 power Stanford and a visit to the Hawaiian islands to play old WAC foe, the University of Hawai'i.
Eighth-year head coach Genny Volpe believes, that the schedule, though challenging, has its opportunities.
"This year's schedule provides the team with a lot of great chances to garner significant wins," says Volpe. "The non-conference portion not only includes two of the nation's premier volleyball programs in Stanford and Hawai'i, but also several teams that are nationally recognized as strong NCAA caliber programs and against schools that are competitive in their respective conferences."
Rice begins 2011 by hosting the Rice Invitational I and the Rice Invitational II. At the Rice Invitational I, the Owls face Delaware on Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. and then host Stanford, on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. The Blue Hens and the Cardinal will match-up on Saturday, Aug. 27 for a 4 p.m. tilt.
The Rice Invitational II (Sept. 2-3) features matches vs. Houston Baptist (Sept. 2), UT-San Antonio (Sept. 2), and Georgia Tech (Sept. 3). Rice then bids adieu to Houston and says aloha to Hawai'i for the first road trip of the season. The Owls will compete at the University of Hawai'i's Verizon Wireless Volleyball Challenge, Sept. 8-10. The Owls face the Rainbow Wahine on Sept. 8, Cincinnati on Sept. 9, and Pacific (Sept. 10).
The next weekend, Rice competes at Stephen F. Austin's volleyball tournament. The Owls will play North Dakota on Sept. 16 and Sam Houston State and SFA on Sept. 17.
Rice starts the 20-match Conference USA portion of the schedule with three consecutive home matches (Houston-Sept. 20, Tulane-Sept. 23, and Southern Miss-Sept. 25). The Owls then hit the road for four matches away from Tudor Fieldhouse.
