HOUSTON – Rice head volleyball coach Genny Volpe announced Wednesday a 29-match 2016 schedule that includes 10 matchups against 20-plus win teams and 11 matches versus Top-100 RPI members from the 2015 season.
In addition, for the first time since 2009 the Owls will host the Conference USA Tournament Nov. 18-20 at Tudor Fieldhouse. The three-day event will be the third league tournament Rice has hosted during its 11-year tenure in the conference.
“The 2016 schedule will provide our team with several exciting matches, both at home and on the road,” Rice head coach Genny Volpe said. “We will be hit right away in our preseason with some top notch opponents ranked in the Top 25. We’ll need to come into the season ready to go, and make a statement. Also, C-USA has some very strong players returning, and I believe the league will be better as a whole. Our team had a very strong spring season and has grown a lot since the fall. We have some key starters returning but also a solid group of returning players that has improved along with a talented freshman class. This team has a strong sense of what we need to do to win a C-USA championship and we know that we need to put in even more work this summer to help us achieve that goal.”
Rice will play 15 matches at Tudor Fieldhouse, which includes two home tournaments. The Owls open the season on the road at the Brigham Young University Tournament, where they will face Cal Poly in the opener on Aug. 26. The following day the Owls play host BYU, who advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament in 2015 and went 28-4 overall. Later that evening the Owls will also take on Utah Valley St.
The Owls will make their 2016 home debut on Aug. 30 against crosstown foe Houston Baptist before again traveling on the road to partake in the University of Missouri Tournament, Sept. 2-3. Aside from Missouri, who went 27-6 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the Owls will also play Utah and Illinois State.
Rice will then host the first of two tournaments, beginning with the Rice Adidas Invite I, Sept. 9-10. The Owls first play Oakland University (Sept. 9), before matches against Sam Houston State and USC on Sept. 10. The Trojans went 33-3 in 2015 and finished the season with the No. 4 RPI in the nation after advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
Texas Tech will pay a visit to Tudor Fieldhouse for a mid-week contest on Sept. 14 before the Owls host the Rice Adidas Invite II, Sept. 16-17. Over the two day span the Owls will face Yale (Sept. 16), followed by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Sept. 17) and crosstown rival Houston (Sept. 17).
Rice’s conference schedule includes home matches against UTEP (Sept. 23), Louisiana Tech (Sept. 25), Marshall (Oct. 14), UAB (Oct. 16), North Texas (Oct. 28), Charlotte (Oct. 30) and UTSA (Nov. 12-Senior Day).
