HOUSTON, Texas – Rice volleyball announced its 2014 schedule on Wednesday, a 30-match slate that includes seven matchups against both 20-plus win squads and Top-100 RPI members from the 2013 campaign.
“I believe this year conference will be extremely competitive and up for anyone to win,” Rice head volleyball coach Genny Volpe said. “We have a newcomer to the league in Western Kentucky, who is traditionally a top 30-40 team nationally. On top of that, we have several great players returning within the league that should make for a very exciting and competitive C-USA season.”
“For us, we have put together some great non-conference matches both at home and away. We have had a great spring season of competition and look to build on that for the upcoming fall season. With a very strong group of returning players as well as four highly competitive and talented newcomers, we should have a stronger, more physical look to our team that should compete well in and outside of CUSA.”
The Owls will play 12 matches at the friendly confines of Tudor Fieldhouse, which includes two Rice Invitational tournaments. Rice begins their season at home on Aug. 29 in the first of the two home tournaments when they welcome in Fresno State, Louisiana-Lafayette and UC Davis.
Rice will then make their first road appearance of the season on Sept. 2 when they travel to Baylor to face the Bears for a second straight season, followed by a three-match tournament at NC State (Sept. 5-6) where they’ll face UConn, Toledo and the Wolfpack.
The Owls mix in a midweek home match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sept. 9 before hitting the road for a tournament at Marquette Sept. 12-13. The Owls will take on a Marquette squad that went 26-6 in 2013, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and had an RPI of 11. Rice will also face Green Bay and James Madison in the tournament.
Rice will conclude their non-conference portion of their schedule with the Rice Invitational II tournament, Sept. 19-20, when they host Texas Southern, Louisville and Stephen F. Austin. Louisville is coming off a 23-8 season in which they advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Rice’s conference schedule includes home matches against UTEP (Oct. 3), Charlotte (Oct. 5), Middle Tennessee (Oct. 24), UAB (Oct. 26), North Texas (Nov. 7), Louisiana Tech (Nov. 9) and Marshall (Nov. 14). In all the Owls will close the season with four consecutive home matches and play six of their final eight at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Six of the Owls first eight conference contests will be on the road. The Owls will travel within the league to Southern Miss (Sept. 26), Western Kentucky (Sept. 28), North Texas (Oct. 1), Middle Tennessee (Oct. 10), UTEP (Oct. 17), UTSA (Oct. 19), FIU (Oct. 31) and Florida Atlantic (Nov. 2).
Senior Day is on Nov. 16 against 2013 C-USA champion UTSA, the final regular season game for the Owls before the C-USA Tournament, which tentatively runs from Nov. 21-23.
