Rice announced its 2013 Volleyball Schedule on Wednesday, a competitive slate that includes 16 matches against RPI Top 150 teams from a season ago and 13 matches against 20+ win teams in 2012.
"Our goal for the season is to get into the NCAA tournament, and competing against a very strong schedule, helps us reach that goal," said Rice Head Coach Genny Volpe.
"With two key offensive losses to graduation, certain players definitely look to take over more responsibility in scoring," added Volpe. "I am excited about the talent, the depth, and the experience that we have returning, along with an extremely athletic and talented freshman class."
"The last couple of years we've come very close to winning a conference championship and earning a bid in the NCAA Tournament. I know that the goal for this team is to win Conference USA, nothing less," said Volpe.
The Owls have a home slate that features 14 home matches, including marquee non-conference matchups with LSU (Sept. 7), NC State, Missouri and Baylor (Sept. 18).
The Owls begin their season in Fresno, Calif., the hometown of Rice senior Mariah Riddlesprigger, to play in Fresno State's tournament, opening the season against 2012 NCAA Participant Santa Clara (Aug. 30), then taking on Cal State Northridge and the host Bulldogs on Aug. 31.
Rice then returns to Houston to host home tournaments the following two weeks, with LSU, Texas A&M Corpus Christi and UALR visiting for the first Rice Invitational (Sept. 6-7), and Houston Baptist, NC State and Missouri coming the following week for Rice Invitational II (Sept. 13-14). The game times for Rice Invitational II will be set once game time is set for Rice's Sept. 14 football game against Kansas. The Owls mix in a road game at Lamar (Sept. 10), and a midweek home game against Baylor (Sept. 18), to round out a string of eight straight, and 19 total, matches in the state of Texas.
Louisville plays host to Rice on Sept. 20-21, as the Owls visit for a tournament that features the Cardinals, who won 30 games, including one in the NCAA Tournament in 2012, Bowling Green and Virginia Tech. In the non-conference season, the Owls play matches against schools from seven of the top nine RPI conferences from 2012.
Rice begins its 2013 C-USA campaign on Sept. 27, hosting C-USA newcomer Middle Tennessee in the Coaches For Cancer match. It is the first of 14 conference games, that sees Rice play every other C-USA volleyball-sponsoring school once. The Owls travel to defending league champion and NCAA participant Tulsa on Oct. 4.
Dig Pink is scheduled for Rice's Oct. 13 match against C-USA newcomer Charlotte.
The Owls go to UTSA for their first conference matchup with the Roadrunners on Oct. 18, and host the other Texas addition to the league on Oct. 27, as the Mean Green of North Texas visit.
Rice's conference schedule includes home matches against East Carolina (Sept. 29), Marshall (Oct. 11), and Tulane (Nov. 10), while the Owls travel to Southern Miss (Oct. 6), UTEP (Oct. 20) and UAB (Nov. 15).
Senior Day is on Nov. 17 against Louisiana Tech, the final regular season game for the Owls before the C-USA Tournament, which tentatively runs from Nov. 21-24.
