The Rice Owls volleyball squad capped a successful spring exhibition season as it won all three matches in a best-of-three-sets round-robin tournament it hosted.
The Owls defeated Sam Houston State (2-1), STORM (ex-college all-stars) 2-0, and Lamar University 2-0
Head coach Genny Volpe enjoyed what she saw from her team.
"After a little bit of a slow start we regrouped and ended up having a very strong overall day of volleyball," commented Volpe. "All of our players contributed significantly to our success. We have 11 returning players that have been working hard all spring and improving. There were times today that I observed a team that can hang with the best teams in the country. I believe our dedication and hard work is paying off, and it was nice to finish the spring season with a tournament victory."
The Owls finished the 2011 campaign with an 18-13 record and tied for second-place in Conference USA with a 13-7 mark. For the 2012 season, Volpe returns 11 letterwinners and five starters from last season's squad.
