The Rice Owls volleyball squad posted 2-2 mark in the second annual F.A.S.T. Complex Collegiate Invitational held at Reliant Center.
Playing best-two-out-of-three matches, the Owls went 1-2 vs. Texas, winning the first set 25-21, but dropped the last two 25-14 and 15-13, 2-0 vs. North Texas (25-19, 25-19), 2-1 vs. TCU (26-24, 19-25, and 15-12), and the Owls then played two hard-fought sets vs. LSU, but came up short in losing 25-23 and 25-19.
Rice head coach Genny Volpe was pleased with her team's overall performance.
"We really got a lot out of this tournament and in playing a prominent team like Texas, I thought we played well with a lot of confidence and it was a great way to start the tournament," stated Volpe. "We had a great deal of success against North Texas and TCU, but we finished flat vs. LSU due to average serve-receive and serving. Overall, our team has made improvements in the areas we have been focusing the most, which have been attacking and blocking. I am very happy with where we are at this point in the spring and encouraged with how we played this past weekend."
On Saturday, April 14, Rice hosts an all-day exhibition tournament starting at 10 a.m. inside Tudor Fieldhouse. Participating teams and schedule will be announced once confirmed and admission will be free.
The Owls finished the 2011 campaign with an 18-13 record and tied for second-place in Conference USA with a 13-7 mark. For the 2012 season, Volpe returns 11 letterwinners and five starters from the 2011 team. AVCA All-America Honorable Mentions Nancy Cole, a middle blocker, and setter Megan Murphy highlight the Owl returnees.
