HOUSTON – Rice junior setter Madison McDaniel will be among 244 athletes from 81 different colleges and 10 high schools that will compete at the U.S. Women’s Volleyball National Team Open Tryouts in Colorado Springs, Colorado, this weekend at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
The tryout will involve four sessions which includes three waves per session. Competition will begin Friday from 3-9 p.m. CT with Saturday’s sessions at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday’s session starts at 8:30 a.m. with tournament style play, which will include 16-18 athletes selected by the U.S. Women’s National Team staff to compete in a “USA” training sessions.
McDaniel, from The Woodlands, Texas, was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Honorable Mention All-American team after a sensational junior campaign. McDaniel was also selected to the C-USA First Team after leading the league with 21 double-doubles. In total, McDaniel recorded 1,291 assists and was third in C-USA in assists per set (10.67). She was also second on the Owls in total digs (391) and digs per set (3.23).
All sessions of the tryout will be streamed live at teamusa.org. USA Volleyball will use #USAVtryout as the event hashtag for photos, notes, quotes and stories posted to its social media platforms.
Selected athletes for the U.S. Women’s National Team may begin their training in Anaheim, California, as early as the spring of 2017, or when an athlete’s scholastic or professional club season has concluded.
The U.S. Collegiate National Team program has three competition options:
*Tour of Thailand (12 athletes): May 19-30
*Tour of Europe (12 athletes): July 15-16
*USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships (projected 36 athletes): June 22-July1 in Minneapolis
Selections for the U.S. Collegiate National Teams will be made by the end of March.
