COLORADO Springs, Col. – Rice volleyball players Chelsey Harris and Jillian Humphrey will both participate in the U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryouts later this month, USA Volleyball announced on Tuesday.
USA Volleyball has a projected record 248 athletes participating in open tryouts for the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team and U.S. Collegiate National Teams program (formerly U.S. Women’s Senior A2 Teams). The tryouts will take place Feb. 21-23, 2014, in Sports Center II at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Humphrey, a middle blocker from Shoreacres, Texas, was an 2013 AVCA All-Region Honorable Mention her junior season while leading the Owls in total kills (337), kills per set (3.04), total blocks (123) and blocks per set (1.11). Humphrey ranked seventh in Conference USA in blocks per set and was 123rd in the nation.
Harris, a right side hitter from Houston, Texas, finished second on the Owls in kills (239) as a freshman and third in blocks (60).
Among the 248 tryout participants representing 106 different colleges are 63 liberos, 61 middle blockers, 61 outside hitters, 36 setters and 27 opposites. The 2013 U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryouts attracted a then-record 240 participants.
The 27 athletes who have already completed their collegiate eligibility will be evaluated for potential spots on the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team. Athletes with remaining collegiate eligibility will be evaluated for the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team as well as the U.S. Collegiate National Teams program.
The U.S. Collegiate National Teams program has two different options if selected. USA Volleyball will have one U.S. Collegiate National Team of 12 athletes and two coaches travel to China June 13-27, 2014, for a series of training sessions and matches in conjunction with a separate team representing the PAC 12 Conference.
The second option for the selected U.S. Collegiate National Team is training and participation at the 2014 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships (GJNC) held in Minneapolis. A projected 36 athletes will be invited to participate in the program with training beginning on June 22, 2014, followed by the competition portion June 26-30. U.S. Collegiate National Teams will compete against each other while serving as inspiration for junior athletes competing in the GJNC on what the next level of competition is like in college.
This tryout is open to current college-age athletes and older born in the years 1986-1996 inclusive, AND high school athletes born in 1996 or earlier.
