Houston - Mariah Riddlesprigger hit for a career and match-high 20 kills for Rice, but it was not enough as Houston prevailed 3-2 in the final Conference USA regular season volleyball match at UH's Athletic Alumni Center.
Rice ends its season with an 18-13 mark and a 13-7 mark in C-USA, good for a second place tie with UAB in the final league standings. The Cougars conclude with a 19-11 overall and 12-8 slate in C-USA.
Houston won the first two sets 25-22 and 25-21, but the Owls rebounded and won set three (25-21) and set four (25-20) to force a fifth and deciding set.
In the fifth set, the Owls held set point 14-13, on Riddlesprigger's 20th kill of the evening. Houston's Chandace Tryon then won the set and the match with three straight kills.
Also in double-digit kills for Rice were Laurie McNamara (16) and Nancy Cole (15). Freshman Jillian Humphrey registered 8 blocks for the Owls and McNamara was credited with 6 blocks. Riddlesprigger also collected 14 digs for a double-double and setter Megan Murphy had 61 assists.
Rice tallied 73 kills and a .280 hitting percentage to Houston's 66 kills and .254 hitting percentage.
The Cougars were led by Stephanie Nwachukwu's 16 kills, while Tryon contributed 15 kills. Katie Norris and Lucy Charuk had 12 kills each and Ingrida Zauere finished with 10 kills.
