MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Rice Owls volleyball team fell 3-0 to UAB in the opening round of the C-USA Tournament Thursday evening, ending a late-season run that had seen the Owls win five of their final six matches entering postseason play.
The No. 10 seeded Owls' (11-19) season comes to an end while No.7 UAB (21-13) advances to the quarterfinals.
Freshman Chelsey Harris led Rice with 10 kills while newly selected C-USA Second-Team All-Conference member Sara Blasier led the Owls with 30 assists. Junior Daniela Arenas led all players with 12 digs.
The Owls never were able to make a run in set one, tying the score 9-9 but never saw the lead from that point. Rice committed nine attacking errors and hit just .108 for the set. In the second set both teams played to 11 ties but the lead only switched three times. Blasier recorded 12 assists in the final set and Tyler Jenkins recorded five kills but the Blazers closed on an 8-6 run to close things out.
