Dallas - SMU captured the fourth and fifth sets to come back and defeat the Rice volleyball team in a thrilling 3-2 Conference USA volleyball match. Set scores were 21-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-20, and 20-18.
The Owls hung tough in the deciding fifth set as the Mustangs held a 12-7 lead and were only three points away from clinching the match. But, Rice went on a 6-1 run to tie the set at 13-13. SMU was able to finagle the final two points on a kill by Dana Powell and then Powell and teammate Courtney Manning teamed-up to block an attack by Owl freshman Mariah Riddlesprigger for its final point.
Rice (15-16, 10-9) was led by sophomore Nancy Cole, who tied her career-high with 20 kills, while junior Jordan Meredith posted a double-double with 14 kills and 18 digs. Owl setter Meredith Schamun also sported a double-double with 62 assists and 19 digs. Libéro Tracey Lam dug up a match-high 33 digs. Megan White also had 27 digs anchoring the Owl defense.
For the match, Rice hit .146 with 71 kills and 126 digs. SMU had 61 kills and a .149 hitting percentage with 113 digs.
Kathryn Wilkerson and Powell led the Mustangs with 15 kills each and Jessica Oliver contributed 14 kills.
Rice concludes the 2010 campaign on Saturday, November 27 when it hosts Houston at 7 p.m. inside Tudor Fieldhouse.
