HOUSTON - The Rice Owls volleyball team closed the 2013 regular season with a 3-0 triumph over Louisiana Tech on Senior Day, defeating the Lady Techsters 25-20, 25-19, 25-19 at Tudor Fieldhouse Sunday afternoon.
Rice seniors Megan Murphy (37 assists, 10 digs) and Mariah Riddlesprigger (12 kills, 10 digs) each recorded double-doubles in their final home match. Junior outside hitter Jillian Humphrey also added 12 kills followed by nine from senior Tyler Jenkins.
The Owls (11-18, 7-7) honored their four senior prior to the match; Lindsay Daniel, Jenkins, Murphy and Riddlesprigger.
Louisiana Tech (7-22, 1-13) shot just .170 for the match and had 16 attack errors.
In set one the Owls used a 9-0 run to break open a 6-6 tie en route to a 25-20 victory. Both Humphrey and Riddlesprigger had five kills apiece while Murphy tallied 12 assists. As a team Rice hit .389 compared to just a .233 hitting percentage from the Lady Techsters. Murphy also led all players with four digs.
The Owls led from start to finish in the second set, winning 25-19. Rice had an excellent hitting percentage of .421, led by five kills from both Humphrey and Jenkins. Murphy assisted on 16 of the 25 points while Riddlesprigger led with six digs.
Rice completed the sweep by winning the third set, 25-19 despite having their lowest attack percentage (.179) of the afternoon. The Lady Techsters had a -0.67 hitting percentage in the third stanza with nine attack errors.
Rice will now set their eyes on the C-USA Volleyball Championship Tournament, held Nov. 21-24 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Rice will enter postseason play on quite the roll, winning five of their final six matches.
The Owls will bt the No. 10 seed and face No. 7 UAB on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. The first three rounds of the tournament will be on the C-USA Digital Network.
