Houston - Marshall's Elizabeth Herman hit a match-high 21 kills to lead the Thundering Herd to a 3-0 Conference USA volleyball victory over the Rice Owls inside Tudor Fieldhouse. Set scores were 25-21, 25-23, 25-21.
With 18 kills, sophomore middle blocker Nancy Cole led the Owl attack, while junior Jordan Meredith posted a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Rice (14-14, 9-7) hit .198 with 47 kills, while Marshall (10-17, 4-11) was more efficient at .282 with 48 kills (13 errors) and 10 blocks.
Marshall snapped an18-18 tie to win 25-21 in the first set. The Thundering Herd hit .206 with 12 kills as Elizabeth Herman led all attackers with 6 kills. Jordan Meredith led Rice with 5 kills. The Owls only hit .093 with 13 kills and 9 errors.
The Thundering Herd won a tightly contested second set 25-23 by hitting .372 with 17 kills and only one error. Herman again led Marshall with 6 kills, while setter Elizabeth Fleming had 15 assists. Rice hit .250 with 20 kills as Nancy Cole hit a whopping 9 kills.
In the third set, the score was tied at 21-21 before Marshall closed out on a 5-0 run. The Thundering Herd tallied 19 kills, with Herman smacking 9 of them. Rice hit .257 with 14 kills as Cole led the Owls with 5 kills.
Rice now hosts East Carolina Saturday night at 7 p.m.
