SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Rice Owls volleyball team won their school record ninth five set match of the season with a 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12) comeback victory at UTSA Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale.
With the victory, Rice (21-7, 11-3) clinched the No. 3 seed in next week’s C-USA Championship and will face No. 6 Southern Miss on Friday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. from Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Freshman outside hitter Nicole Lennon had her most complete match of the year for the Owls with 23 kills and 24 digs, both of which were season-highs. The Katy, Texas native hit .323 and had a team-high 25.0 points. Sophomore libero Lee Ann Cunningham led all players with 33 digs while senior setter Madison McDaniel had a match-high 58 assists.
Rice limited UTSA (11-15, 9-5) to a .169 hitting percentage and posted 14.0 team blocks, six of which came from sophomore middle blocker Grace Morgan.
In the fifth set the Roadrunners cut the Rice lead to 12-10 but out of a timeout the Owls got consecutive kills from Stephanie Mendivil and Kassidy Muse and clinched the set on a UTSA attack error.
