MIAMI, Florida – The Rice Owls volleyball team picked up a critical win on the road Sunday afternoon, defeating FIU in four sets (3-1) 23-25, 25-22, 25-13 and 25-21 to sweep the weekend matches in the state of Florida.

The Owls (8-17, 5-6) were coming off a 3-1 win at Florida Atlantic on Friday, which snapped a five-game road losing streak in the process. FIU (10-14, 4-7) entered Sunday in a three-way tie with Rice for seventh place in the C-USA standings.

Junior middle blocker Jillian Humphrey led the Owls with 18 kills, the second-most by a Rice player this season. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Noelle Whitlock also contributed 11 kills, marking the fifth consecutive match that the Riverside, California native reached double-figures in kills.

Redshirt freshman Sara Blasier achieved her fifth double-double of the season and fourth straight with 44 assists and 12 digs. Junior libero Daniela Arenas (14 digs) and sophomore defensive specialist Kimberly Vaio led the Owls in digs with 14 and 13, respectively.

Rice struggled offensively in set one, hitting just .161 with six attack errors en route to a 25-23 setback. However, the Owls responded in positive fashion by winning the next three sets by a combined score of 75-56.

The Owls hit a match-best .250 in set two and had a 76 percent sideout percentage in set four.
