BOCA RATON, Florida – The Rice Owls volleyball team snapped a three-game losing streak and won their first road game since Sept. 10 with a convincing 3-1 triumph over the Florida Atlantic Owls Friday evening at the FAU Arena.
Rice (7-17, 4-6) defeated FAU (10-14, 2-8) 27-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-18 to earn their first conference road victory of the season. The Owls finished with their second-highest attack percentage of the season (.333), third-most digs (77) and most assists in four-set match (63).
Freshman Sara Blasier continued her solid play of late with 56 assists, seven kills and 10 digs. Blasier was one of four Owls who finished in double-figures in digs, joined by Kimberly Vaio (19), Daniella Arenas (18) and Noelle Whitlock (12).
Rice also had four players in double-figures in kills, led by 13 from Chelsey Harris. Jillian Humphrey (11 kills), Whitlock (11 kills), and Mariah Riddlesprigger (10 kills) also finished with double-digit kills. The double-doubles for Blasier and Whitlock were their fourth and eighth of the season, respectively.
The Owls led from start to finish in the first set, winning 27-25 led by Blasier’s 15 assists and Humphrey’s six kills. In set two Florida Atlantic had their highest attack percentage of the evening (.349), landing 22-of-43 attacks to win 25-23.
Rice cruised in set three, 25-15, closing on a 19-9 run to take control of the match. In the fourth set the Owls never trailed again after falling behind 1-0 and Blasier registered 16 final assists to help seal the victory.
The Owls will now look to make it two straight wins on Sunday when they travel to Miami to face Florida International. That match is set to begin at 12 p.m. (CT).
