Huntington, W.Va. - The Rice Owls, using a balanced attack, dismantled Marshall 3-0 in a Conference USA volleyball match inside the Cam Henderson Center. Set scores vs. the Thundering Herd were 25-16, 25-17, and 25-18. The Owls, with a 3-1 win at East Carolina, posted a 2-0 record on one of the most taxing road trips of the year.
The two victories kept Rice firmly in third place in the C-USA standings and still within striking distance of first-place Tulsa and second-place SMU. The Owls are now 6-2 on the road in C-USA matches and have now defeated Marshall for the fourth-straight time.
Rice had two players with 9 kills and two more with 8 kills in the 3-0 sweep of Marshall. Posting 9 kills on the day were two newcomers junior transfer Jordan Meredith and freshman Mariah Riddlesprigger. Laurie McNamara and Nance Cole had 8 kills for the Owls (14-11, 9-4).
Freshman Megan Shepard had five blocks with 1 block solo and 4 block assists to lead the Rice defense at the net. With a match-high 17 digs was senior Tracey Lam, while setter Meredith Schamun had 28 assists and 9 digs.
As a team, Rice finished the day with a .250 hitting percentage (39-15-96), while Marshall (9-15, 3-9) could only muster an .041 hitting percentage (26-22-97).
The Thundering Herd's top attacker was Elizabeth Herman with 8 kills.
The Owls begin a stretch where they have four-straight matches at home in Tudor Fieldhouse. Next Friday (Nov. 5) Rice hosts Memphis at 7 p.m. and UAB on Saturday (Nov. 6) also at 7 p.m.
Marshall pays a visit for a match on Nov. 12. Note the time of that match is 5 p.m., as the Rice men's basketball squad opens its 2010-11 season with a 7 p.m. game vs. the University of St. Thomas following the volleyball match. The Owls and East Carolina then play on Saturday, Nov. 13 in Tudor Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
