Greenville, N.C. - Nancy Cole smashed a career-high 20 kills to lead the Rice Owls to a convincing 3-1 road victory over East Carolina inside Minges Coliseum. Set scores were 25-19, 25-19, 24-26, and 25-16. Also in double-digit kills for Rice was freshman Mariah Riddlesprigger with 15 kills.
Cole, a sophomore middle blocker, had previously hit 18 kills in the match vs. SMU one week ago. She also led all attackers Friday night with a .471 hitting percentage (20-4-34) and contributed five blocks (2 block solo, 3 block assist) on the night as well.
Rice senior setter Meredith Schamun posted a match-high 35 assists with 8 digs and senior Tracey Lam led the Owl defense with 19 digs. Junior Jordan Meredith dug up 10 digs, while freshman Megan Shepard had 9 kills and five block assists for the winning team.
The Owls (13-11, 8-4) were consistent as they hit 14 kills in each of the first two sets and 13 kills in the final two sets to finish with 54 (.189). The Pirates (1-22, 0-11) managed 41 kills and a .086 hitting percentage.
Jackie Varnum led ECU with 10 kills and a .318 hitting percentage. ECU tallied 13 blocks on the night, one more than Rice.
The Owls next play at Marshall (9-14, 3-8) in Huntington, W.Va. on Sunday, October 31, at 11:30 a.m. (Central). The Thundering Herd lost its Friday night contest 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-22) to Houston.
