HOUSTON- Rice's volleyball team was defeated 3-1 by Houston at the Athletics/Alumni Center on Friday. Nancy Cole lead the Owls with 14 kills.
"I thought it was unfortunate that we came out looking the way we did, because we did have a couple of good days of practice," said Rice head coach Genny Volpe. "We focused in execution and today we didn't look like that team at all."
"We're looking forward to getting back to basics in practice, playing better overall volleyball, and representing Rice volleyball the way I know we can in our last two home matches," added Volpe.
The Owls fall to 16-10 on the season and 9-3 in C-USA. The Cougars improve to 7-15, 6-6 in league play.
Cole led with 14 kills and three blocks. She has 1,218 kills for her career, and needs 15 more to tie Leigh Leman for 10th all-time at Rice. The senior from Duncan College reached double digits in kills for the 10th straight game.
Megan Murphy had 33 assists and 10 digs for her 11th double double of the season.
Rice took the first set 25-19, coming back from an 8-4 deficit to take the set. Cole had six kills in the first set for the Owls.
The Owls dropped the second set 25-12, after the Cougars hit .353 in the set.
Jillian Humphrey hit .500 in the third set, registering five kills, but it was not enough as the Cougars took the set 25-18.
The Owls battled back from a 21-15 deficit in the fourth set to close to 24-22, but the Cougars took the set 25-22.
The Owls host Southern Miss on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in Tudor Fieldhouse.
