SAN ANTONIO – Chelsey Harris recorded a team high 13 kills (.321) for the Rice Owls Friday evening but it wasn’t enough to slow down the UTSA Roadrunners in a 3-0 setback at the Convocation Center.
Rice (14-9, 6-2) lost for just the second time in their last 12 matches while UTSA (15-4, 6-1) improved to 12-1 in their last 13 matches and remained undefeated (7-0) at home.
The Roadrunners outhit the Owls .285-.180 and had a 74-54 digs advantage. In addition to Harris, senior Leah Mikesky contributed 10 kills and junior Madison McDaniel posted 34 assists. UTSA’s outside hitter Dajana Boskovic led all players with 27 kills while sophomore Antonela Jularic chipped in 13 kills.
“UTSA was the better team today,” Rice head coach Genny Volpe said. “Unfortunately we didn’t play our defensive game and their offense was clicking. When a player (Boskovic) averages 9 kills per set it’s tough to slow them down. Chelsey kept us in it offensively but I know we can perform at a higher level.”
Rice played UTSA tough in an opening set that saw 10 ties and seven lead changes. However, UTSA broke open a 16-16 by outscoring the Owls 9-3 down the stretch for a 25-19 victory. In set two the Owls rallied from a 17-12 deficit and fought off two match points to take a 27-26 lead. UTSA responded with consecutive kills from Boskovic and then sealed a 29-27 win on a block. The Roadrunners controlled much of set three despite Rice hitting a match-high .220 and completed the sweep with a 25-21 victory.
The Owls will look to bounce back on Sunday when they face the UTEP Miners (4-17, 2-6) from El Paso at 1 p.m. (CT).
