EL PASO – The Rice University volleyball team dropped their second match of the weekend on Sunday, falling in straight sets (25-22, 25-15, 25-20) at UTEP.
Rice (6-16, 3-5) was denied their first conference road victory of the season (0-4) while the Miners (11-7, 5-2) improved to 7-1 on their home floor.
Owls’ sophomore Noelle Whitlock led the Owls with 11 kills while on the back row junior Daniela Arenas led Rice with 12 digs. Sara Blasier finished the afternoon with 31 assists. For the match Rice hit .191 with 29 digs and four blocks. UTEP hit at a .333 clip with 35 digs and four blocks.
The Owls and Miners went back and forth in set one with 13 ties before UTEP pulled away. In the second set Rice struggled offensively, hitting just .031. Rice and UTEP were tied 16-16 in the third set before the Miners went on a 9-4 run to complete the victory.
Rice will return home next weekend for just one match on Sunday, Oct. 27 against North Texas at 1 p.m.
