Memphis, Tenn. - Sophomore middle blocker Nancy Cole, with 14 kills, a match-high .478 hitting percentage, and 8 block assists, led the Rice Owls volleyball team to a thrilling four-set match win on the road against the Memphis Tigers in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Memphis won set one 25-23, but the Owls stormed back to capture the next three sets 25-22, 25-22, and 25-19.
The win gives Rice a 12-9 overall record and a 7-2 mark in Conference USA, while Memphis drops to 12-8 on the year and 3-5 in league action. With the victory, Rice remains alone in third place in the C-USA volleyball standings.
Also in double-digit kills for the Owls was junior Ashleigh McCord with 11 kills to go with 10 digs. Setter Meredith Schamun posted 37 assists on the day, while libéro Tracey Lam dug up a match-high 26 digs.
Rice (12-9, 7-2) hit .273 with 43 kills, while Memphis (12-8, 3-5) only hit .107 with 46 kills. The Owls on the night were credited with season-high 17 team blocks to Memphis' 6 blocks.
The Tigers were led by Altrese Hawkins' 16 kills, while Marija Jovanovic contributed 13 kills.
Rice next weekend hosts Conference USA's top two teams in SMU (16-4, 8-1) on Friday at 7 p.m. and Tulsa (19-2, 9-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches take place inside Tudor Fieldhouse.
