Birmingham, Ala. - The Rice Owls volleyball squad dropped a hard fought five-set match to the host UAB Blazers in Conference USA volleyball action Friday evening. Set scores were 18-25, 26-24, 26-24, 19-25, and 13-15. The loss snaps the Owls' modest four-match winning streak and brings their record to 11-9 on the season and 6-2 in C-USA action, meanwhile the Blazers improve to 5-14, and 2-5 in the league.
Rice was led by freshman Mariah Riddlesprigger's career-high 16 kills and Nancy Cole's 14 kills and 7 block assists. As a matter of fact the Owls tallied a season-high 26 block assists on the night, as freshman middle blocker Megan Shepard carded six block assists of own as well to pair with her 8 kills. Sophomore Laurie McNamara posted 9 kills with 5 block assists.
The Blazers outhit Rice 64 kills to 55. UAB also managed a higher attack percentage .216 to .128. The Owls had no answer for UAB's Sam Serley. Serley pounded a match-high 18 kills with a phenomenal .593 hitting percentage. Ally Slaughter and Michelle Uzoh each contributed 13 kills to the UAB attack.
