MURFREESBORO, TN – The Rice Owls volleyball team made quick work of the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders Friday evening, registering their fourth consecutive win with a 25-15, 25-15, 25-15 straight-sets victory at the Alumni Memorial Gym.

In the process of improving their record to 15-5, 5-1 on the season, the Owls ran their consecutive sets win streak to 12 straight since losing the opening game at North Texas on Oct. 1.

“I’m very proud of this team,” Rice head coach Genny Volpe said. “We came out very focused and had some solid goals in mind. Jill (Humphrey) and Leah (Mikesky) really dominated offensively and Sara’s (Blasier) performance was solid. Defense and blocking was really strong for us today and we look to continue improving in those areas.”

The Owls hit .459 (48-of-85) as a team for the match while limiting the Blue Raiders to just .083 (28-of-96). Rice did a solid job defensively as well, forcing MT (6-13, 2-3) into 20 attack errors and winning the digs (43-26) and blocks (8-2) battles.

Humphrey led the Owls with 12 kills (.647 hitting %) while Mikesky joined her in double-figures with 10 (.474 hitting %). Blasier led all players with 32 assists while Daniela Arenas led all players with 16 digs.

The Owls only trailed 1-0 in the opening set before running off 10 consecutive points to pull away. Mikesky had six of her 10 kills in set one, playing a big role in leading Rice to a .485 attack percentage in the set.

Rice led from start to finish in set two, before winning yet again 25-15. The Owls hit a match-high .524 for the set and held a lead as big as 19-6. The Blue Raiders hung with the Owls for much of the third set before Rice went on a 14-5 run to close strong and complete the sweep with another 25-15 win.

Rice will have this Sunday off before completing their three-match road trip next weekend at UTEP and UTSA.
