TULSA, Okla. – Despite a strong stretch in the second set, Rice University volleyball was unable to overcome a Tulsa rally in a three-set match on Friday night, 25-23, 25-23, 25-17, as the Golden Hurricane won its fifth contest in a row.
On the back row, Daniela Arenas led Rice with 26 digs and moved into 13th place on the Rice career digs list with 1,037. The junior chipped in a pair of assists and the Owls’ lone ace of the evening.
For the match, Rice hit .117 with 76 digs and three blocks. Tulsa (13-4, 2-0) hit at a .163 clip with 70 digs and seven blocks.
A back-and-forth opening set saw 20 ties and 11 lead changes, before the Owls claimed a late 22-21 lead. From there, Tulsa went on a 4-1 run to claim a 25-23 win.
Rice bounced back in a huge way in the second set, jumping out to a 10-5 advantage and extending it to as many as eight points before the Hurricane staged a rally. Trailing 21-14, Tulsa knotted the score and went on to take another 25-23 win.
Using the momentum gained late in the second set, Tulsa jumped out to a 13-5 advantage and played the Owls even the rest of the way to secure a seventh-straight victory in the series.
Rice closes out its road swing on Sunday afternoon at Southern Miss. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. CT.
