Tulsa, Okla. - The Rice Owls volleyball team put up a good fight but could not overcome Tulsa in losing 3-0 Sunday afternoon in the Reynolds Center.
Set scores were 25-17, 25-22, and 25-22. The loss puts the Owls record at 8-8 on the season and 3-2 in Conference USA, while the Golden Hurricane improves to 13-4 and 4-0 in C-USA.
Tulsa has now won 26-straight C-USA matches and has captured 38 of its last 39 matches in league play. The loss snaps Rice's modest three-match winning streak.
Unforced errors by the Owls did not help their cause.
"We just made too many unforced errors today to beat a quality opponent like Tulsa," stated Rice head coach Genny Volpe. "We hit for an extremely low hitting percentage which is particularly disappointing. But, we are going to take this as a lesson learned and move forward."
The Owls tallied 36 kills and hit only .112, while TU managed 43 kills and a .208 hitting percentage.
"I am pleased with defensive efforts of Daniela (Arenas) and Megan White, they battled hard today," said Volpe.
Last year's C-USA Player of the Year Tyler Henderson posted a match-high 15 kills with only one error in 28 attacks for a .500 hitting percentage for Tulsa. Diana Silva also was in double-digits with 13 kills.
Rice is on the country road to Huntington, West Virginia, next weekend for two matches at Marshall (Oct. 8 and Oct. 9).
