HOUSTON- Tulsa defeated Rice 3-2 Sunday afternoon in Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls remain in second place in C-USA after five games.
Tulsa (12-7, 5-0 C-USA) takes sole possession of first place in C-USA, after knocking off Rice (11-8, 4-1 C-USA) in five sets.
"I felt we had the upper hand in the fourth set, and in those situations are where we have to mature," said Rice Head Coach Genny Volpe. "We see a point spread that big, we have to take advantage of it."
"Even when we didn't feel like we were playing our best volleyball today, we were beating a team who is at the top of the conference," added Volpe.
Reigning four-time C-USA Setter of the Week Megan Murphy posted 52 assists and came a kill and a dig short of her second triple double in a week's time. She has 50+ assists in five matches this year.
Nancy Cole led the Owls with 18 kills, joined in double digits by Mariah Riddlesprigger, who had 14 kills and 22 digs for her second straight double double.
Kimberly Vaio led the Owls with a career-high 23 digs, while Daniela Arenas matched her career-high with 22 digs, posting that total for the second straight game.
The Owls rallied back from a 24-22 deficit to take the first set 26-24, after Megan Murphy and Lizzy Bache combined for the assists and kills on the last four points of the set.
Tulsa rallied back to take the second set 25-21, holding the Owls to .108 hitting in the set.
Rice overcame a 5-1 deficit to start the third set to eventually win 25-22. The Owls received four kills from Nancy Cole in the fourth set.
Despite a 17-12 Rice lead, Tulsa took the fourth set 25-23 to force Rice into a tiebreaker for the third straight match. Rice dropped the fifth set 15-10.
The Owls return to the floor on October 5, as they host UTEP at 7 p.m. in Tudor Fieldhouse.
