LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In the first of two matches on Saturday, Rice University volleyball took a hard-fought loss to Active Ankle Challenge host Louisville, 3-0. The Owls return to the court at 4:30 p.m. CT to square off with Bowling Green in the tournament finale Saturday afternoon.

Jillian Humphrey led the offense with 12 kills and a .333 hitting percentage and assisted on three of Rice’s five blocks in the match.

Daniela Arenas passed 13 of the team’s 39 digs and converted on of the Owls’ four service aces. Mariah Riddlesprigger added nine digs to accompany three kills.

Sara Blasier set 30 of Rice’s 36 assists as the squad hit .178 in the match, compared to .337 for the home team.

In the opening set, the Cardinals (3-6) led by as many as five points before the Owls (3-10) narrowed the gap to just one point twice, but UL held on for a 25-23 win.

The Cardinals then jumped out to a comfortable lead in the second and hit .481 in the set to earn a 25-15 victory to take a 2-0 advantage into the intermission.

Following the break, the teams played several back-and-forth points before the Owls fell behind by five points midway through the set. The teams played even the rest of the way in the 25-20 clincher.

Rice and BGSU face off at 4:30 p.m. CT in the Owls’ final match before Conference USA play opens next weekend.
