Owls Triumph Over Texas Southern in Straight Sets

HOUSTON, Texas - The Rice Owls volleyball team returned to action at Tudor Fieldhouse Friday morning for the first time in 10 days, defeating Texas Southern in the first match of the Rice Invitational II in straight sets (25-13, 25-18, 25- ) for the seventh consecutive victory.
Rice (9-3) recorded their sixth sweep of the season by outhitting the Lady Tigers, .279-.075, a season-low by an Owls opponent. Ten different Owls had a kill, including a team-high nine from freshman Portia Okafor. The Lewisville, Texas native had a .571 hitting percentage (9-of-14) and also had a team-high three blocks.
Senior libero Daniela Arenas recorded a game-high 22 digs and in the process moved into second place on the Rice all-time digs list, surpassing Yvette Kirk's mark of 1,405 digs. Rice sophomore Sara Blasier had a game-high 33 assists while also blocking three shots.
The seven consecutive victories is the most by a Rice team since the 2009-10 squad that won nine consecutive matches.
Rice defeated Texas Southern (1-10) 25-13 in set one with a match-best 85 percent sideout percentage. The Owls then held the Lady Tigers to just .071 hitting in a 25-18 victory in a second set that saw Rice lead from start to finish. Rice then completed the sweep with a 25-19 victory in the third set with the Owls able to play a mixture of players.
The Owls will go for their eighth straight win when they face Louisville later tonight at 7 p.m. at Tudor Fieldhouse.
