Nacogdoches, Texas - The Rice volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak with a 3-1 win over Sam Houston State at Chilly Fillmore's SFA Invitational.
Set scores were 25-22, 25-17, 22-25, and 25-19. The Owls improve to 4-6 on the season, while the Bearkats drop to 7-6.
"It's nice to be back in the win column, but we are still showing that we have got to be more consistent with our defense," stated Rice head coach Genny Volpe. "We are playing at a high level offensively, but we need our defense to match that intensity."
Four Rice Owls led that offensive intensity that Volpe spoke of vs. Sam Houston State. Nancy Cole, Laurie McNamara, and Mariah Riddlesprigger all had 11 kills, while Lizzy Bache contributed 10 kills to the cause.
McNamara had a match-high .379 hitting percentage (11-0-29), while Cole followed at .375 (11-2-24). Defensively, Megan White led Rice with a match-high 15 digs.
Rice setter Megan Murphy, who directed the balanced attack, posted a match-high 47 assists to pair with 10 digs for her team-leading fifth double-double of the season. Riddlesprigger also had 10 digs to register her second double-double.
The Owls hit .276 with 52 kills to Sam Houston State's .154 (55 kills) and out-blocked the Bearkats 11 to 4.
Carli Kolbe led SHSU with 18 kills, while Kelli Stewart was credited with 10 kills.
The Owls hope to make it two in a row when they face Stephen F. Austin State at 7 p.m. Saturday night.
